How to treat exacerbations (or 'flare ups') of COPD in the community? 

Signs and Symptoms

More short of breath than usual

Increased cough, with or without increased mucus or sputum. 

Breathing interrupting your sentences

Wheezing more than usual

Using more muscle to help you breath - needing more effort to breathe

Agitation

Initial Management 

Salbutamol (Respigen, Ventolin, or Salair) with spacer, up to 5 individual puffs

Prednisone 40mg for 5 days

Oral antibiotics (if evidence of infection) - usually 5 days worth of Amoxicillin or Doxycycline

When would you need hospital ?

Are your symptoms very severe?

Has you or your whanau noticed any confusion?

Is it a real struggle to manage at home?

Have you not responded to the treatment given by your GP?

Have you noticed worsening swelling of your feet?
